Yoga for Back Care & Scoliosis

California Yoga Center’s Back Care classes are for those with back conditions such as lower back pain, disc disease, sciatica, upper back and neck tightness, or asymmetry in the body due to scoliosis or other minor imbalances.

Many people come to yoga for relief of back pain, whether it’s as minor as neck or lower back tension or as serious as severe scoliosis. Often the pain can be chronic rather than from a specific injury or a condition.

Done with correct emphasis both classical and modified yoga postures or asanas can be particularly beneficial for back conditions such as lower back pain, disc disease, sciatica, upper back and neck tightness, and scoliosis. This work can address poor posture, tightness, reversed neck curve, shoulder dislocation, scoliosis, and kyphosis of the upper back.

In a yoga for back care or scoliosis class the goal is to encourage a yoga practice that avoids unnecessary pain both in our lives and in our yoga practice.

The primary focus is on developing sensitivity to the natural curves of the back and to the condition of the muscles supporting the spine. There is also an emphasis on creating space between the vertebrae to avoid compression or shortening of the spine. In these classes, students practice postures that emphasize both strength and flexibility.

Yoga for scoliosis is a particular expertise at our center. CYC founding member, co-director and senior teacher, Elise Browning Miller, is an internationally acknowledged expert on the topic with over 35 years of teaching experience and authoring several books and articles on the topic.

In classes and workshops teenagers to senior adults are welcome as are teachers who want to assist their students who have scoliosis.

We welcome anyone with scoliosis who wants to experience the benefits of yoga for spinal health.

Thank you for all your amazing knowledge of yoga and keeping our backs strong and healthy; so glad I found your class!
